Armenia is a country rich in cultural heritage and traditions. While some traditions date back thousands of years, they, like the people, have adapted to modern times and are still celebrated today. Armenia's culture encompasses many elements based on the people's geography, language, beliefs, literature, architecture, dance and music. Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD. One of the most important components of Armenian culture is music and dance. The Armenian language dates from the early period of Indo-European differentiation and spread about 5000 years ago or is even more ancient. Classical Armenian architecture is divided into four distinct periods. The first Armenian churches were built between the 4th and 7th centuries.
